The railway station is one of the more surprising stops in Madinah. It belongs to a much more recent layer of history than most of the city's sites, and it is a useful reminder that the story here did not stop in the early centuries.
What the railway was
Completed in 1908, the Hejaz Railway ran from Damascus to Madinah — a journey that had taken pilgrims and traders weeks by caravan, reduced to a matter of days. Madinah was its southern terminus. The line was never extended further, and regular service lasted barely a decade before the First World War and its aftermath ended it.
What survives here is the terminus itself: the station building, workshops and rolling stock, restored and presented as a museum of the line.
Why it is worth an hour
- The station building is a well preserved example of early twentieth-century Ottoman engineering in the Hejaz.
- Locomotives and carriages from the line are on display, not just photographs of them.
- It shows how pilgrimage travel actually worked in the period immediately before modern transport.
- It is indoors and shaded, which matters in summer.
How it fits with everything else
The railway pairs naturally with the city museums rather than with the Sirah sites. Together they cover the later history of Madinah — how the city was administered, supplied and reached — which is the part of the story most short visits skip entirely.
A line built to carry pilgrims, abandoned within a generation. The station is the clearest surviving piece of it anywhere.
Practical notes
Opening hours vary and the site is occasionally closed for maintenance, so it is worth confirming before travelling across the city. Photography rules differ between the outdoor rolling stock and the indoor galleries; the staff will tell you where the line is.
